WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ORANGERY AND A CONSERVATORY?

Here at Sereco Windows, we offer both orangery and conservatory installation but we often get asked what really is the difference between them both.
Typically, orangeries are known to be bigger and grander, and were known as orangeries in days gone by because homeowners used to grow orange trees in their prestigious homes. The firm pillars formed shelter for the oranges whilst the expanse of glass all around allowed the suns rays in to help the oranges to grow and ripen.
The True Difference Between an Orangery and Conservatory
Today the difference between an orangery and a conservatory is a hard to differentiate. The true definition states that an orangery glass roof typically covers less than 75% of the overall roof area whilst a conservatory covers at least 75% of the overall roof area. A bit of a fine line!
Also, orangeries can be defined as bridging the gap between a conservatory and a full single-storey extension. They can incorporate the styles of the Edwardian and the Victorian range.
Orangeries also can have brick pillars or insulated aluminium columns within the wall structure adding an element of grandeur and making it feel more of a proper extension. But on the other hand, orangeries can also be designed with full glass from ground level right to the top of the structure. So, you can see this fine line makes it hard to differentiate between the both options.
Orangery Roofs
Both conservatories and orangery roofs can be made from glass or polycarbonate panels or solid tiled structures. The idea on both is that they bring the outside into your home and nowadays, most styles of conservatories can look just as grand as an orangery. There are so many design options on both, including colours, glass types and decorative cornices So, it would not really matter what you classify it as.
